Baldur's Gate 3 — A Benchmark for Modern RPGs
Larian Studios had an enormous task ahead of them when they announced Baldur's Gate 3. Reviving a beloved franchise while adapting the famously complex Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition ruleset was always going to be ambitious. The result, after years of early access, is nothing short of extraordinary.
What Is Baldur's Gate 3?
BG3 is a turn-based role-playing game set in the Forgotten Realms. You begin as a character infected by a mind flayer parasite that threatens to turn you into one of the most feared creatures in the D&D universe. The story branches, twists, and reacts to your choices in ways that few games have ever managed.
Gameplay: Deep but Accessible
Combat is turn-based and built around D&D 5e mechanics — meaning dice rolls, action economy, and environmental interactions all matter. What makes it click is the sheer creativity the game allows:
- Shove enemies off ledges mid-battle
- Cast spells that permanently alter terrain
- Talk your way out of (or into) nearly any situation
- Sneak, pickpocket, and deceive with real consequence
Whether you're a newcomer to CRPGs or a veteran, there's a difficulty setting and play style that will fit you.
Story and Characters
The writing is BG3's crown jewel. Your companions — Shadowheart, Astarion, Gale, Lae'zel, Wyll, and Karlach — are fully realized characters with arcs that rival those in prestige TV. The game tracks hundreds of variables to make the world feel genuinely reactive. A decision in Act 1 can echo meaningfully in Act 3.
The main narrative spans three acts and can run anywhere from 80 to well over 150 hours depending on how thoroughly you explore.
Presentation
Visually, BG3 is stunning. Each area — from the sunlit grove of the Emerald Forest to the oppressive darkness of the Underdark — is beautifully realized. The voice acting is exceptional across the board, with standout performances from the entire main cast.
A Few Caveats
No game is perfect. BG3's third act, while rich in content, shows some signs of being less polished than the first two. Performance on older hardware can also be demanding. And the sheer depth of the game can be overwhelming for players new to the genre.
